Intergenerational activities where aging adults and children come together weekly are one of the many unique aspects of Neighborhood House programs. Intergenerational bonds strengthen cognitive, physical, social and emotional domains for both children and adults.
Activities include joint gardening in our climate-controlled greenhouse and the outdoor therapeutic sensory garden space. This kind of evidence-based horticultural therapy supports individual health and wellness while also improving nutritional awareness and environmental stewardship for both age groups.
Adult clients have access to the gardens and green-house year-round where they receive horticultural therapy services, an evidence-based practice supporting individual health and wellness. Current research links this therapy to stress reduction, and improvement in mood affect, memory, task initiation, socialization, coordination, balance, and endurance.
