Honoring Our Founder’s Vision

Emma McVicker1This Women’s History Month, we’re proud to honor Emma McVicker, who founded Neighborhood House in 1894. Emma saw the need for affordable childcare in our community and created a safe, caring place for families.

Over the years, we’ve expanded to meet new challenges. In 1978, we introduced adult day care, continuing Emma’s mission to offer a welcoming space for all ages.

Thank you for being part of our story as we adapt and grow to meet the needs of our community.

From Seeking Help to Leading the Way: Jennifer Nuttall’s Story

At Neighborhood House, we often talk about supporting families, but for our Executive Director, Jennifer Nuttall, this mission is deeply personal. Years ago, when she suddenly became a single mom to her nephew and niece, life turned upside down. She needed affordable, reliable childcare—a lifeline that brought her to Neighborhood House.

What started as a place of support for her family quickly became something more. She began working at Neighborhood House, driven by a desire to give back to the community that had helped her. Through hard work, dedication, and a heart full of empathy, she rose from the Development Director to become our Executive Director, leading the growth of Neighborhood House to expand impact and increase the number of families served.

Jennifer’s story shows how support and opportunity can transform lives. Her journey is a reminder of the power of community and what’s possible when we lift each other up.

66% of Moms Considered Leaving Work Due to Childcare Costs

The high cost and stress of childcare force many parents, especially moms, to make tough choices. According to the 2024 Motherly Report, 66% of mothers considered leaving the workforce last year due to childcare challenges.

At Neighborhood House, we understand these struggles. Our nationally accredited childcare programs for children aged 15 months to 12 years are offered on a sliding fee scale, ensuring all families have access to the support they need.

By providing affordable childcare, we’re not just helping families—we’re also strengthening our community.
