Week of the Young Child 2014

Week of the Young Child 2014

WOYC Banner

Starting Monday, April 7th, Neighborhood House celebrates Week of the Young Child, an annual event hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children:

The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

We look forward to this opportunity to continue ensuring each and every child experiences an environment that promotes early learning in the home, at school, and in their communities. Join Neighborhood House and other early childhood programs across the nation as we take the time to recognize children’s opportunities are our responsibility. Help us celebrate the Week of the Young Child.

Monday April 7th is Lending Library Day

Begin Reading Challenge

The Lending Library starts today! Families are invited to check out books to enjoy at home before returning for a new book!

Today is also the beginning of the Neighborhood House Reading Challenge. Classrooms set their own goals and each child is sent home with a tracking chart to monitor their progress.

Tuesday April 8th is Parent Recognition Day

LEAP Literacy Program

Today, Neighborhood House offers a free breakfast of bagels and coffee for children and their parents. The breakfast starts early for parents working morning hours and offers families a chance to eat together.

We’ll also be taking pictures of families to decorate our centers and celebrate the important role parents hold in the lives of their children.

In the afternoon, the school-aged children will be kicking off a new literacy program with the students of the University of Utah’s LEAP Program. The first part of the program involves the college students helping our students to design a “reading buddy” at the Build-A-Bear Workshop at the Gateway Mall. Then college students take the finished bear back to school and take pictures around campus. They send pictures, bears, and written letters to their pen-pals at Neighborhood House, and the Neighborhood House kids write back! We are looking forward to such a fun and educational project, and we’re grateful to the LEAP students for all their help. Keep an eye out for more information later this spring!

Wednesday April 9th is Volunteer Day

Parents are invited to come and volunteer in the classrooms today!

We’ll also be honoring our foster grandparents from SeniorCorps and our America Reads tutors of the University of Utah. We are so grateful to all of our amazing volunteers and all the time they spend with our children each and every week.

Thursday April 10th is Field Trip Day

Every child goes on a field trip today! Our school age children will be attending the Build-A-Bear Workshop, funded by LEAP. The kindergarten students will also be taking a walk to the Peace Gardens in the afternoon. Our preschool students will be visiting the Hogle Zoo with the University of Utah Greek System and, for the youngest, staying at Neighborhood House for a field day hosted by the U of U Greeks.

Friday April 11th is Staff Appreciation Day

Today, we honor our staff for the great work they do with our children every day. We are encouraging parents to write notes to the staff members who have made a difference in their lives and the lives of their children.
