The holiday season is always a busy time at Neighborhood House. Here’s just a short list of recent and upcoming events. Be sure to check our events calendar for a longer list.
Thanksgiving Family Fun Night
Our November Family Fun Night, sponsored (and well attended!) by Lone Peak High School. The Lone Peak students catered and served our meals to dozens of Neighborhood House families, from both the children and adult centers. We had over 250 people in attendance for this fun night, which featured literary presentations from the school age students, including the alphabet by the younger kids, and a song from the sign language club. The kids also taught us how to cook our Thanksgiving turkeys — but we don’t recommend you take their advice!
Woods Cross and Santa
The wonderful students of Woods Cross High School will be joining us again this year, bringing another Santa to Neighborhood House, loaded down with presents for all of our students. Woods Cross has been absolutely instrumental in making the holiday season special for our children, and we are incredibly grateful for their help! Keep an eye out for the very sweet pictures of Woods Cross students with the Neighborhood House kids.
Lone Peak and the North Pole
The students of Lone Peak High School have been a huge help this holiday season. Not only did they help with our November Family Fun Night, but they’ll also be back around for this month’s Gingerbread Village (see more below). They will also be visiting our kids several times throughout the month of December, and have set their fundraising goal for Neighborhood House at $45,000! Watch their progress for yourself at their Gold Rush website, which also lays out the dates they’ll be here and what else they’ll be doing to help.
One of our favorite activities was the North Pole trip — read all about it here.
Our December Family Fun Night will be on Monday the 23rd at 4:30 PM. The latest iteration of the gingerbread village is an open event and fun for kids and families alike, generously sponsored by Leslie Corbit and family. Each family gets everything they’ll need to build a delicious gingerbread mansion — cookies, candy, frosting, and more — before the houses are all joined up to make our very own gingerbread Neighborhood! Be on the look out for more details!
We are lucky enough to partner again with a local church group who provides shoes/boots for all our children this winter. Each child at Neighborhood House made an ornament with their picture and shoe size. The ornaments were then given to the church, who sought out sponsors to buy the appropriate footwear. A big thanks to the Happy Feet program for keep our toes toasty warm this winter!
For over 20 years now, the Bear Foundation, in association with Fireman and Friends Foundation have been partnering with Neighborhood House to take our children Christmas shopping. It’s a massive, all-day event involving children of low-income families from all over the Salt Lake area. This year, 50 NH kids were invited to participate, from breakfast to a Walmart shopping spree! Given a budget of $100, the kids go crazy, buying gifts for themselves, siblings, parents, friends, and whatever else they can find. It’s a great opportunity to give the gift of giving to children who might not normally enjoy gifts on Christmas morning — and it’s a thrill to see it all unfold!
Our annual preschool Christmas program went off without a hitch this year! The preschool kids and their teachers worked hard for weeks on holiday songs like Jingle Bell Rock, Mele Kalikimaka, and Burrito Sabanero, sticking to their “Christmas Around the World” theme. Parents, guests, and board members came out to watch, and at the end of the show, the kids had a special visitor, direct from the North Pole! Each child received a pair of shoes (from Happy Feet), a pair of gloves, a hat, and a toy or game, courtesy of Ebay!
We’d like to take a moment to thank all our sponsors, participating companies, donations, individuals, and everyone else who made this wonderful — and bountiful! — holiday season a possibility. We couldn’t have done any of this without you, and we are so grateful for your generous help. Thank you!
