Part I: Our Historic Legacy
The founding of Neighborhood House has been called a pioneering effort. A pioneer is a person who goes before, preparing the way for others. Pioneers are known for being resourceful, creative, and working together as a community to improve the quality of each person’s life. Neighborhood House’s founders certainly modeled these traits and were innovators ahead of their time in their ideas and endeavors in establishing such an important community resource. In 1978, Neighborhood House was already well established as a quality day care with programs for children and families. When they realized that there was not a program that provided a safe place for adults during the day, however, Neighborhood House met the challenge and established the Adult Day Services center to help adults with disabilities or age-related decline and their families.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of Neighborhood House’s Adult Day Services, which was the first of its kind in Utah. Today, Neighborhood House represents two of only six adult day care centers in the state. With the increasing population of older adults and the rising number of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, the need and value of this service has become increasingly apparent. Thanks to the pioneers at Neighborhood House, we are prepared to meet the challenge with the same strength and vision as our founders.
The history of the recreational therapy field is not long, but this method of care has come a long way in such a short period of time, which is exciting for the potential of continued growth and improvement we will see in the future. Neighborhood House’s Adult Day Services program offers the same excitement and sense of potential. Since 1978, we have provided Adult Day Services and have even expanded to two center locations. In 35 years we have accomplished a great deal in improving the quality of life for our adult clients and their families. It is a dynamic program that is always changing and growing and Neighborhood House is certainly excited to be a part of this great field of care as we blaze new trails into the future!
